MOTHER BOSWICK: THE BEST SHOW YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED is a fun show.

How fun is it?

A clowning character piece from of Bay Area, Barnum and Bailey veteran David Magidson, MOTHER BOSWICK is a charming 1 man, 3-character, comedy about the nothing and everything at the heart of corn-fed americana. Mother Boswick herself is the star of the show, the high camp, high prophetess of the kind of late-night open access television that makes up the backbone of surrealist found footage festivals. Magidson drift lazily between bits, letting the absurdism of the character baste into every line, dripping with the nostalgia of a 121-year-old woman who has a whole section of the local cemetery in dedicated to her 14 dead husbands.

Nostalgia seems to be a subtle running theme within the performance, Magidson (sometimes awkwardly) bolting between two other characters clearly past their prime. Additionally there’s the toupeed Melton Spritzer, the washed-up Vaudeville comedian, painfully punches through one-liners about the bad-old days gone by. Dangerfield by way of Gil Gunderson.

Finally, we are greeted by Oldman Boswick, the decrepit former body builder who slowly shuffles through his ancien workout routine. Not all the jokes totally gel into place, I found myself wanting more of Spritzer and less of Oldman Boswick, but It’s all in good fun. The kind of breezy piece that’s a fairly low-brow good time.
