1935: The Federal Theater changed the shape of the independent artist and gave birth to theatre as we know it.
1958: The Off-Off Broadway Movement formalized a new way of thinking – and performing – on stage and screen
1964: Off-Off-Broadway productions were made eligible for Obie Awards, and in 1974, the Drama Desk Awards began evaluating them the same way as Broadway and off-Broadway.
1975: The Actors Equity Showcase Code put off-off Broadway into the public eye.
Concurrently, in the 1960s and 1970s many filmmakers created a path for a whole new wave of American directors and filmmakers who set out to challenge Hollywood’s status quo.
1980s: Off-Off Broadway became a destination due to its bravery in casting and material. Several obsure theatres began to gain public exposure.
1985: Amadeus, distributed by Orion Pictures, is the first Academy Award Best Picture winner with no distribution from one of the major or mini-major studios.
The 1980s also brought about the rise of the Film Festival.
2026: OFF-OFF BRAODWAY AND INDEPENDENT FILM & TV GO MAINSTREAM
While there are 41 Broadway theaters opening about the same number of shows per year, double that number of off-Broadway theaters; and literally HUNDREDS of off-off Broadway theaters open more than 2,000 shows per season.
There are also THOUSANDS of Film Festivals showing indie films.
